Chapter Twelve

I could have sworn Lane was purposefully driving slowly. If there was a traffic light just turning yellow, he made sure to stop instead of coasting through or speeding up to make it. And I couldn’t handle it. There had already been too much time wasted talking with hospital personnel and finding a way out of the building without being spotted by the damn lingering press core. At a certain point, when we were close to the ranch and I knew exactly where we were and where I needed to be, I threatened to jump out of the car and run the rest of the way unless his foot found the gas pedal more often. My brother grumbled a few times, but we got there.

Thankfully, the police let us through the first set up of guards that led to the abandoned farmhouse. We were instructed to stop when we got to the second barrier, though. While Lane was parking the car hundreds of feet back from the old, red brick residence, I started scanning the mini-group of cops and others who were gathered in the area. But I did not see Finn, which worried the hell out of me. Before Lane even had the car legitimately in park, I released my belt and opened the door to exit.

“Damn it, Lara!” my brother yelped. “Hold up.”

Lane was directly behind me as I approached Reese. “Where is he?” My anxious body felt like there were millions of tiny creatures trying to escape from under my skin.

She had not seen us approach. Her focus had been entirely on the farmhouse in front of us. So, it startled her a bit to see me suddenly standing right there. Looking more troubled than I had ever seen her, she didn’t bother to ask what I was doing there or who I was talking about. She just delivered the news I feared. “He’s inside.”

After closing my eyes to try to unsuccessfully wish it away, I asked in more of a hushed tone, “Are there cops in there, too?” My skin was absolutely crawling.

“No,” she said in a similar scary, quiet voice and then turned to face the farmhouse once again. “Just Briar and Arinn.” Her speech rose a little when she added, “He’s gonna be so upset that you’re here.”

Mine did, too, out of pure anger and fear. “I know!” I was sick of hearing from everyone else what I should be doing and, in particular, what they thought Finn thought I should be doing. “Tough,” I punctuated.

I focused on the house now, too. Directly surrounded by law enforcement in heavily-shielded gear, I knew the situation couldn’t be any more serious for both Arinn and Finn. There was no visual inside the building. All the drapes appeared to be closed, and the front door was the solid wood variety, devoid of any type of window. One could only imagine what was happening just on the other side of that entry. And when you knew it involved two of the most precious people in your life and a gun, imagination was not your friend.
